The thing about SEO is that it's always growing and changing, and things never stay the same for too long. This is because search engines are always growing and changing, and SEO must necessarily adapt to those changes. Here are some things that remain relevant for your website in contemporary SEO.

Content: content always has been crucial, always will be: Content is what all of the rest of your site is there to support. If you don't have good content on your site, you don't have anything, so take your time and make it good quality and make it relevant.

Page load speed: This is an important element for user interaction as well as search engine ranking. No one wants to wait ages for their site to load!

Optimise for mobile: because mobile usage is only going to get bigger and more prevalent.

Linking: Never cut corners on this, because it will get you discredited. Link scheming is bad SEO practice, organic is best.

Use multiple platforms and be creative: Interacting with industry leaders and popular figures (or academics) on social media is proving to be very useful. Besides which, it's exciting for people to see.

Remember user experience: keep this in mind at every point. Don't make your site ugly or hard to use for the sake of a few easy ranking points.

Remember this when looking for an SEO company: if they're good at SEO, they will rank highly in search engine results themselves. You can test out the feasibility of a company claiming to specialise in SEO pretty easily. Just Google them.
