First Ranking gets 37% of Google Traffic

It's been a while since we got some accurate stats on the value of ranking number 1 in Google. I mean, it doesn't take a genius to work out that ranking number 1 on Google, for your chosen keywords was going to be a good thing for your business, but now we have the stats to back it up.

A recent study by Optify shows that:

"These results clearly show that with an average 37% click through rate, the benefit of ranking number one is very valuable, and with 60% of the clicks going to the top three (usually above the fold), ranking at the top of the first page is more valuable than ever."

So what does this mean for your business? Well, not a lot changes in terms of your objectives, but it certainly shows why SEO is still so important.

Ranking number 2 is not enough

With the difference in CTR from the number 1 ranking to the number 2, its now not enough to be happy with second place. These results tell us, more than ever, that first position is still the most valuable.

The game hasn't changed

The game and the objective still remain the same. Rank higher and drive more traffic to your website. The same rules apply, and the same tactics form the basis of a good ranking.

The Long Tail Search Terms have massive value

Although the end game should still be to rank for high traffic volume keywords, targeting the low hanging fruit can also have massive benefits. Ranking for long tail keywords will give you faster results , and in many cases, a similar amount of traffic (accumulatively).

"...While head terms yield higher CTR for position one (32% for head terms versus 25% for long tail), long tail terms show better overall CTR on page one (4.6% average CTR for head terms versus 9% average CTR for long tail terms)"

Always be Optimising

The main take home from this study is that there is always more you can do. Google provides a huge ammount of traffic for everything you can think of. How much do you want? And how much do you want it?
